The nearest water isn’t always the easiest to start from. A good launch has parking close by and a short, flat carry to the edge, on a shore the wind blows from rather than towards. On a lake or a loch, that’s the sheltered side, where the water stays calm while you get on.
Most inland water in England and Wales belongs to someone, and much of it needs a licence or a day permit to paddle. That comes from British Canoeing, a local club, or the landowner. Scotland is more open under its access code. The directory can’t tell you the access rules spot by spot, so check what the water you pick needs before you set off.
We’ve compiled launch spots across the UK from several open data sources, so you can search them all in one place. Paddlers add their own put-ins and photos on top, and the directory grows from there.
